The Canadian Jewish Playwriting Competition recognizes the most outstanding unproduced Canadian plays with a Jewish focus. The winning playwright will receive $1,000 (CDN) and an 8-hour CAEA workshop with a director and up to six actors. This workshop concludes with a public reading.
The winner of the 2025 Canadian Jewish Playwriting Competition is… Costume Party by Ontario playwright Ori Black. Prinz is finally ready to introduce his new girlfriend to his best friends. What better event than a silly costume party pre-game? But when an old friend shows up with an unnerving surprise, Prinz is forced to reconcile with the uncomfortable truths he’s tried so hard to ignore.
An equity play reading of Costume Party will take place here at the MNjcc. Stay tuned for details!
Second place honorable mention goes to The Write Stuff by Quebec playwright Oren Safdie and third place honorable mention goes to Pigeon Among the Cats by Alberta playwright Caroline Russell-King.
The 2025 competition is co-presented by Bema Productions (British Columbia), The Winnipeg Jewish Theatre (Manitoba), The Harold Green Jewish Theatre Company (Ontario), and The Segal Centre for the Performing Arts (Quebec). Generously supported by The Asper Foundation.
