Join Sarah Milroy of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection to learn more about Uninvited: Canadian Women Artists in the Modern Moment, celebrating extraordinary female artists.

Uninvited: Canadian Women Artists in the Modern Moment celebrates the extraordinary Canadian women painters, weavers, photographers, beadworkers and sculptors from a century ago, explores the diversity of women creators from coast to coast to coast – many of whom have been neglected by traditional art history – and challenges the notion of the quintessential Canadian artist.

Generously sponsored by the Fingerhut/Metcalfe family.

Presented in partnership with the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. Join us virtually or in-person at the Miles Nadal JCC, including afternoon tea!

Sarah Milroy is the Executive Director and Chief Curator of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinberg, Ontario, Canada’s only museum devoted exclusively to Canadian and Indigenous art. Previously, Milroy served as editor and publisher of Canadian Art magazine and as lead art critic of the Globe and Mail. Her major touring exhibitions include From the Forest to the Sea: Emily Carr in British Columbia (2010), David Milne: Modern Painting (2018), Early Days: Indigenous Art from the McMichael (2020) and Uninvited; Canadian Women Artists in the Modern Moment (2021). In 2020, Milroy was made a Member of the Order of Canada.

The McMichael is the only museum in Canada devoted exclusively to Canadian art. Our expansive collection of works by the Group of Seven and their contemporaries forms the core of our holdings, enhanced by our extensive collection of works by First Nations, Métis, Inuit, and contemporary artists. The gallery is surrounded by a network of outdoor trails, a sculpture garden and forty hectares of conservation land with breathtaking views of the Humber River Valley. Our mission is to develop insightful and accessible exhibitions that explore Canada’s artistic past while also breaking new trail on the art of our time. For more information, please visit https://mcmichael.com/

Beverley Fingerhut was one of the very first female IT executives in Canada, becoming Vice-President at CGI Canada. Later, she became National Program Director at the Centre of Excellence in Business Analysis at the Schulich School of Business at York University. A lifelong learner and hearty appreciator of culture, her love of visual art inspired her to volunteer as a docent at the AGO. A devoted Miles Nadal JCC community member and Lay Leader, Beverley generously volunteered her time for 6 years to lovingly curate and lead the Miles Nadal JCC Book Club. In December 2019, UJA Federation honoured Beverley with a Community Volunteer Award, in recognition of her years of devotion to our community. Beverley passed away in April 2021. She touched and transformed the lives of so many in our JCC community, and she is dearly missed. To commemorate Beverley’s lasting legacy, the Annual Beverley Fingerhut Memorial Lecture was created. Honour to her memory!
