דער פילאָסאָף טעאָדער אַדאָרנאָ האָט געזאָגט, “נאָך אוישוויץ איז דאָס שרײַבן אַ ליד באַרבאַריש” און “עס איז געוואָרן אוממעגלעך הײַנט צו טאָג צו שרײַבן פּאָעזיע.” צום גליק האָבן ייִדישע שרײַבערס ניט געוווּסט פון דער אוממעגלעכקייט און האָבן געשריבן גאָר אַ סך און גאָר טיף אויף דער טעמע. טייל, ווי יעקב גלאַטשטײן אין אַמעריקע, האָבן פאָרױסגעזען די אָנקומענדיקע קאַטאַסטראָפע, אַנדערע ווי אַברהם סוצקעווער, אליעזר וויזעל און רחל קאָרן האָבן עס אַליין איבערגעלעבט אין די געטאָס, אין די וועלדער ווי פּאַרטיזאַנערס, ווי געפאַנגענע אין קאָנצענטראַציע-לאַגערן אָדער אין פאַרשיקונג אין צענטראַל-אַזיע. אין דער פּרעזענטאַציע וועל איך זיך טיילן מיט רעקאָרדירונגען און טעקסטן פון אַן אָפּקלײַב פון זייערע שאַפונגען. מיר וועלן זען ווי זיי ראַנגלען זיך מיט ענינים פון גלויבן, שולד פון לעבן-געבליבענע, די אָפּמעקונג פון חורבן-זכּרון און די באַציִונג פון ייִדן צו אַ פײַנטלעכער וועלט, סײַ פאַר און סײַ נאָך דעם חורבן.
Philosopher Theodore Adorno said, “After Auschwitz, to write a poem is barbaric” and that “it has become possible to write poetry today.” Fortunately, Yiddish writers were not aware of this impossibility and wrote profusely and profoundly on the subject. Some, like Yankev Glatshteyn in America, foretold the oncoming disaster, others like Avrom Sutzkever, Elie Wiesel and Rokhl Korn lived through it themselves, in ghettoes, as partisans in the forests, as prisoners in concentration camps or in exile in Central Asia. In her lecture, SHEVA ZUCKER will share recordings of some of these writers reading their own work and discuss how they grapple with questions of faith, survivor guilt, the erasure of Holocaust memory and the Jewish relationship to a hostile world, both before and after the Holocaust.
