This May, the Miles Nadal JCC invites you to a unique exploration of diverse identities within the Jewish community. “Mifgashim” is a photography project and exhibit that focusses on Canadian and Israeli Jews living in Toronto. Twelve families who identify as holding both of these two distinct identities will be the subject of this art project. “Mifgashim” translates to “encounters” or “meetings”. We’re excited to facilitate a “meeting” between the public and the families lying at this unique intersection, where two cultures encounter one another in one family.

Through intimate interviews and powerful portraits taken by acclaimed photographer Liat Aharoni, this program dives deep into the lives of these families, uncovering the complexities, commonalities, and contrasts between their Canadian and Israeli Jewish experiences. These personal stories will be compiled alongside the photographs into a printed collection, offering a snapshot of how these two identities coexist, complement, and sometimes challenge one another. The accompanying portrait exhibition will be displayed in the MNjcc gallery throughout May, coinciding with Canadian Jewish Heritage Month and Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day, on May 1st.

With “Mifgashim”, we will foster a deeper understanding of the nuances within Jewish identity, challenging the perception of Jews and Israelis as a monolithic group and highlighting the diverse stories that shape these communities. By sharing these experiences, we aim to build connection, empathy, and dialogue, reminding us that every identity is multifaceted, and every story is worth telling.
