Using interviews and archival recordings this film meticulously links the story of American Yiddish creativity with Guthrie’s art as rooted in the Oklahoma Dust Bowl of the 1930s.
CONGRATULATIONS TO ADAR SHAFRAN AND HIS FILM RUNNING ON SAND
Director Adar Shafran successfully manages to highlight serious issues of systemic racism and wealth disparity with a light touch in this feel-good crowd pleaser. Aumari is saved from being deported from Israeli to Eritrea when he is mistaken as a professional Nigerian soccer player.
Despite his lack of soccer talent, he pretends to be the star recruit he was mistaken for, taking his place on the Israeli team and bonding with the daughter of the team’s owner. Chancela Mongoza (Asylum City), who came to Israel as an asylum seeker himself, dazzles as Aumari.
“The movie hits the sweet spot between a truly light-hearted comedy and a real drama, with engaging characters you care about and funny situations, but with a strong narrative and a heartfelt message about treating people with respect, no matter where they are from.” Jerusalem Post
