Canadian artist Vera Frenkel has created an extensive body of work spanning from the 1970s to today. As an early innovator in embracing new technologies, her videos, installations, and online projects explore themes such as cultural memory, migration, and the influence of language and media on identity and community.

In the first of two lectures accompanying As If By Chance…, a two-channel video and print installation, Lisa Steele offers an overview of Frenkel’s artistic career and contributions.

Lisa Steele is an artist, curator, and educator born in Kansas City, Missouri, based in Toronto since 1968. Recognized as a leading Canadian video artist, her practice also involves performance, installation, and photo/text works. And since 1983, Steele has collaborated exclusively with her partner, Kim Tomczak, creating works that examine themes of fear, faith, love, and the power of society over individual freedom. Together, in 1980, Steele and Tomczak co-founded Vtape, an artist-run video art distributor. She is also Professor Emeritus, Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, University of Toronto.
