In honour of 100 years of Jewish Immigrant Aid Services, the Ontario Jewish Archives worked with JIAS Toronto to curate Love the Stranger, an exhibit recalling and celebrating 100 years of Jewish immigration to Canada and of Jews welcoming and supporting immigrants and refugees.

Museum Studies graduate student Avi Margolis took the lead on this project, starting at ground zero and diving deep into literally hundreds of boxes of JIAS files at the OJA, searching for archival gems to highlight and celebrate a century community history. How do you embark on a project like this? How do you pick and choose from 100 years of archives? When does the mundane cross over and become interesting and even extraordinary through the lens of history? How do you gather and organize materials to tell a compelling story?

Join us to see Love the Stranger and explore/discuss the process of curating, telling and celebrating our community’s stories.
