Tzedakah Box Project

A multi generational exhibit of Tzedakah boxes Schwartz Reisman Centre.

Type of Exhibition: Art

A multi generational exhibit of Tzedakah boxes Schwartz Reisman Centre, 2nd floor Satellite gallery

Derived from the Hebrew word meaning justice and righteousness, Tzedakah represents far more than charity. It reflects a core Jewish value rooted in compassion, responsibility, and caring for others.

Traditionally used to collect donations, the Tzedakah box has long held a meaningful place in Jewish homes, schools, and synagogues. This exhibition was conceived and developed by curator-in residence Melanie Siegel and marks the second exhibition presented in the space. The project is generously funded by the Schwartz Reisman Centre.

Participants were invited to interpret the theme through their own artistic voice and creative process. Working over the winter months, they transformed simple Tzedakah boxes into unique works of art using textiles, paper, canvas, and mixed media. The completed works come together in an exhibition that celebrates both
individuality and shared cultural tradition.

Bringing together participants across generations, the project highlights how art can connect community, heritage, and personal expression. Each Tzedakah box serves not only as an object of giving, but also as a visual statement reflecting identity, memory, and values.

The exhibition will be on view on the second floor of the Schwartz Reisman Centre Satellite Gallery from June 1, 2026 through May 2027.

Participants include students from four Jewish day schools, seniors from V!VA, and a group of selected artists invited to take part in this special exhibition.
